Feb 13, 1891 Shakopee Courier Killed- A farmer living over the river the past 15 years and formerly from Henderson prairie, named Fred Gruenwald was killed last Thursday by his team running off the embankment the south side of the Shakopee bridge. His age was 41 years 1 mo. 8 days, was born in Germany and came over when a year old. The funeral occurred on Sunday from the Shakopee Lutheran church. Feb 12, 1891 Scott Co. Argus - Last Thursday night about quarter after ten Chief police Chas. A. Rose found a team at the bottom of the embankment leading to the bridge. Upon closer investigation Fred Gruenwald was found under the bobsled with his neck broken; a front runner of the sled being across the man's neck. Coroner Alois Hirsher took charge of the body and decided that it was not necessary to hold an inquest. Gruenwald was a resident of Eden Prairie town living near Riley's Lake, Thursday afternoon he sold some wood here and then filled up with liquor. About nine o'clock in the evening he started for home. The tracks in the snow showed that he had been across the bridge and had returned to this side and then beyond the fencing, which is at either side of the approach to the bridge, the team had turned to the right, going over the embankment where the grade is at an angle of about forty degrees and the distance to the bottom only about eight feet. There were no witnesses to the accident, but it is presumed that as the sled went down the grade Gruenwald rolled off the front of the wood rack and the sled ran across his neck, breaking it. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Lutheran church. Feb 19, 1891 Chaska Valley Herald We publish an account of the death of Fred Gruenwald, taken from Shakopee Argus.
