May 16, 1919 Scott Co. Argus One of the best known old residents of Eden Prairie township passed away Friday morning at 7:40 o'clock in the death of William Sass. at the age of nearly seventy-seven years. Mr. Sass had been ill since Easter with pneumonia but improved until last week Monday when he suffered a relapse and died of hemorrhage of the brain. He was a native of Germany where he was born in Aug., 1842 and grew to manhood. His marriage to Mollie Browfelt took place in Russia April 21, 1870. Thirty-three years ago they came to America, going first to Jordan where they remained for two months and then moved to their present home at Eden Prairie. Surviving him are his wife and three of seven children born to them. The children are Albert Sass and Mrs. Herman Ries of Shakopee and William, at home. Beside these are a brother, Carl Sass of Jordan, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The body was brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herman Ries in this city Sunday and funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. George Matthiae of St. John's Lutheran church officiating. Interment was in Valley cemetery. Relatives from other points in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Miller of Almena, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Chris Busse, Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Schultz and daughter, Frank Gerrick of Lydia. Argus Following and illness since the holidays, Mrs. Amalia Sass passed away Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Herman Ries, with whom she had been staying for the past ten weeks and was given most devoted care. Death was due to heart disease. Mrs. Sass has been ailing since an attack of influenza a year ago, but was never really confined to her bed. On the morning of her death she was up and walked about her room and talked with members of her family. Later she lay down to rest and death came to her quietly and peacefully as she slept. Amalia Braunsfelt was born Nov. 11, 1850 in Koenigsburg, Germany. At the age of eight years she went with her parents to Riga, Russia, where she grew to womanhood. Her marriage to William Sass took place April 21, 1870 in Riga and they resided there until June 1881, when they to America with four children, one daughter having died in Russia. The family settled at Jordan for one year and then moved to Eden Prairie, their home subsequently. Mr. Sass died five years ago May 9th. Of seven children born to them only three survive, William, at the Eden Prairie homestead, Albert and Mrs. Augusta Ries, both of Shakopee. There are also six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two sisters Mrs. Mary Miller of Almena, Wis., Miss Caroline Gerlich of New Richmond, Wis., and one brother, frank Gerlich of Jordan. Mrs. Sass was a most estimable woman and had lived a useful and energetic life, enjoying the respect and regard of a wide circle of friends who were always welcome to share the generous hospitality of her home. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church of this city and one of the first members of the Ladies Aid at it's earliest organization and her death is sincerely mourned. the sympathy of all who know them goes out to the bereaved and sorrowing family in their loss. funeral services will be held this afternoon, at two o'clock from St. John's Lutheran church, rev. May 15, 1924 Shakopee Tribune It is with regret that we publish the obituary of Mrs. Amelia Sass, who passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ries, last Tuesday, May 13, at 8:30 a.m. Her death was caused by heart disease from which she had been a sufferer since last December. Mrs. Sass, nee Amalia Gierlich, was born in Germany on Oct 11, 1851. She spent the first eight years of her life in Germany and in 1859 accompanied her parents to Riga, Russia where she later met and married William Sass on April 21, 1870. In June, 1883, the couple decided to immigrate to this country. When they landed in America they immediately came to Jordan where thy remained for two years and then moved to Eden Prairie in the vicinity of Riley's Lake where they lived the remainder of their lives. Mr. Sass passed away five years ago on May 9. The deceased woman was the mother of seven children, four of whom, Pauline, Ernst, Mary and Emma are dead. The survivors are Wm. Sass, who lived with his mother on the farm until her death, Albert Sass and Mrs. Herman Ries of Shakopee. She also leaves one brother, Fred Gerlich of Jordan and two sisters, Mrs. Rudolph Miller of Almena, Wis. and Miss Caroline Gierlich of New Richmond, Wis. The late Mrs. Sass was beloved by all who knew her as she was a loving mother and kind hearted neighbor. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. at the Lutheran church in this city. Rev. Mattiae will be the officiating clergyman. Dec 14, 1939 Hennepin Co. Review Services for Mr. William Sass, 64, of 5508 40th Ave. S., Mpls, were held Monday afternoon at the Anderson mortuary. he is survived by his wife, Lillian. Mr. Sass, who died Friday, was an Eden Prairie until 1926 when he sold his farm to Mr. and Mrs. Don Clapperton. Until that time he spent his entire life in Eden Prairie. Feb 26, 1925 Shakopee Tribune While in attendance at the funeral of her nephew, Wm. Tessmer, at the Lutheran church last Friday afternoon, Feb. 20, Mrs. Herman Ries of this city was suddenly stricken with a heart attack and passed away at the church before medical aid could come to her assistance. The deceased lady had been afflicted with heart trouble for some time past and the shock and strain caused by the sickness and death of her nephew who had made his residence for some time past, evidently overtaxed her strength and the fatal attack came very suddenly while her nephew's funeral services were being conducted at about 3:15 P.M. Mrs. Ries, nee Augusta Sass, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Sass of Eden Prairie. She was thirty nine years at the time of her death having been born on Nov. 23, 1885 at Jordan. When she was a little girl her parents moved to the vicinity of Riley's Lake near Eden Prairie where she grew to womanhood. On April 23, 1908, she married Herman Ries, who survives her with two small children, Arthur aged seven, and Maria, five. She leaves two brothers, Albert Sass of Shakopee and William Sass of Eden Prairie. Her father preceded her to the grave five years ago and her mother passed away only nine months ago. Funeral services were conducted at Lutheran church in this city on Monday afternoon, Feb. 23 at 2 o'clock, with Rev. G.L. Matthiae as the officiating clergyman. The pallbearers were William Abel, Chas. Abel, August Strehlow, Reinhold Dorn, Charles Behm and Henry Mathew. The body was laid to rest in Valley cemetery. Relatives and friends from out of town who came to Shakopee to be in attendance at the funeral were Rev. Karl Ries of Wampum, Wis., Mrs. Gustave Ries and Mrs. Rudolph Mueller of Almena, Wis., Mrs. Harvey Shue of Haywood, Wis., and her daughter Gladys of St. Paul; Mrs. Peter Renter of Comstock, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Emil Wasko and son, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ries, Paul Ries and Mr. and Mrs. Jake Ebinger and family of St. Paul; Alfred Sass and family, Mrs. Herman Kerkow and daughter, Mrs. Hessing and Mrs. Dubbe of Jordan; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schultz and daughter, Viola and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Feldten of Lydia; Henry Mattfeld, Herman Genrich and Henry Bruesehoff of Cologne. Mrs. Ries death was learned with profound regret by the people of Shakopee as she was held in high regard by all who knew her. Her sudden death is a sad shock to her husband and two children to whom the Tribune and the many friends extend condolences. May 17, 1956 Shakopee Argus-Tribune Albert F. Sass, age 74,for many years a resident of the Shakopee and Eden Prairie communities, died suddenly of a heart attack in St. Paul, Monday morning, May 7. The funeral was held from the Carlson funeral home, St. Paul, at 1 P.M. Thursday, Mat 10, with Rev. G. Huggerick. Interment was in Valley cemetery. Pallbearers were Albert Berglund, Roger Greer, Richard Tasler, Oscar Berglund, John Koch and Richard Greer. Mr. Sass, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sass, was born in Rica, Russia, and as a child came with his parents to America and settled on a farm in Eden Prairie township near Riley Lake where he grew to manhood. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Shakopee and also attended school here. On Nov 18, 1908, in a ceremony at Chaska, he was married to Bertha Ebinger. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Sass made their home in Eden Prairie where Mr. Sass was employed on the M&St.L. R.R. until 1918 when the couple moved to Shakopee. Here Mr. Sass found employment in the American Range foundry where he remained until ill health forced his retirement and the couple moved to St. Paul. Mr. Sass had been in fairly good health until a few weeks ago when he was hospitalized for observation and treatment. he was to be discharged from the hospital and return to his home when he suffered the fatal heart attack. He was the last surviving member of his family. A familiar figure in Shakopee where he was well and favorably known. Mr. Sass had many devoted friends who held him high regard. He is survived by his wife who resides at 741 E. Third St., St. Paul. Nov 9, 1961 Shakopee Valley News Mrs. Bertha Sass, a resident of Shakopee for many years, died Tuesday, Oct 31, at the age of 78 years. On Friday, Oct. 28, she had suffered a fall which fractured her hip, shoulder and wrist, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Koch, with whom she made her home. she was taken to St. John's hospital where she died. Mrs. Sass was born in Chaska on May 6, 1883. in 1908, she married Albert Sass. The couple lived in Eden Prairie and Shakopee until 1950, when they moved to St. Paul. Mr. Sass died there five years ago. Mrs. Sass is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Ida Greer, Mrs. O.E.(Margaret) Berglund, Mrs. J.H.(Rose) Koch, Emma Ebinger and Mrs. P.(Helen) Tasler and two brothers, Ernest and Clarence Ebinger, all of St. Paul. Burial was in Valley cemetery, Shakopee. June 28, 1889 Shakopee Courier Died, June 18, Earnest, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sass, aged 16 « years. Funeral at the Lutheran church with services by Rev. F. Spindler, from thence to Valley cemetery. Oct 18, 1894 Scott Co. Argus Died-In Chanhassen, Wednesday, Oct 14, 1894, of enlargement of the heart, Emma Sass, aged five years and seven months. Oct 8, 1909 Shakopee Tribune -Wm. Sass, representive of the Knewood Ice Co., is shipping ice at Riley's Lake this week. May 1, 1908 Scott Co. Argus Will Sass, Jr., one of the employees of the ice company, fell from a box car and had the misfortune to break one of his feet. He is able to move about with the aid of crutches. Nov 19, 1920 Shakopee Tribune Miss Anna A. Sass, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Sass of Jordan, and Mr. Alfred H. Dorn of Chanhassen were married Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Jordan M.E. church, Rev. Dr. C.H. Sauter officiating. The bride is one of Jordan's most esteemed young ladies and the groom is a respected and enterprising young farmer of this section. After a wedding trip to Wisconsin they will reside on the groom's fine farm near Reilly's Lake. The Tribune extends congratulations.
